في مدينة البندقية عام 1596م يتوسل (باسانيو) إلى صديقه التاجر الثري ( أنطونيو) أن يقرضه مبلغًا كبيرًا من المال ليتمكن من جذب (بورشيا) الثرية جداً، و لكن( أنطونيو) كان قد استثمر ثروته في الخارج ، لذا لجآ إلى مقرض الأموال اليهودي (شيلوك) للإستدانة.
