Oversigt
En filminstruktør (Marcello Mastroianni) kæmper for at finde den kreativitet, det kræver, for at han kan færdiggøre sin næste film, men han bliver konstant forstyrret af producenter, sin kone og sin elskerinde. For at flygte fra sine plageånder trækker instruktøren sig tilbage i en verden af minder, drømme og fantasier. Resultatet er en række fantastiske temaer og drømme, der gør 8½ til den ultimative Fellini-film. Den afspejler også Fellinis egne problemer, før han fik dette filmprojekt sat i gang.
