Parigi. Antoine Doinel è un dodicenne che vive, con la madre ed il patrigno, una situazione familiare poco felice. Nel piccolo appartamento non c'è molto spazio per lui... A scuola è un ragazzo difficile da gestire. L'unico suo buon amico è René, compagno di scuola e di bricconate.
