Trama
La storia del giovane colonnello Robert Gould Shaw e del 54° reggimento di fanteria, costituito esclusivamente, ufficiali a parte, da soldati di colore, in gran parte ex schiavi fuggiti dal Sud, che nel 1863 fu mandato a un inutile assalto al Fort Wagner sull'isola Morris (South Carolina). Vi persero la vita più di mille giubbe blu nere.
