Psychologická dráma bývalého policajta Fergusona, ktorý sa zamiluje do ženy, ktorú má sledovať, a až potom postupne zistuje, že sa stal obeťou rafinovanej hry. Hitchcock vyšiel z románu známej francúzskej dvojice Pierre Boileau-Thomas Narcejac, nazvaného Medzi mŕtvymi, ale prispôsobil si ho, ako bolo jeho zvykom, svojím vlastním potrebám. Dej zasadil do malebného prostredia San Francisca.
